ETSI is pleased to announce the workshop “Future Evolution of Marine Communication”. The event will take place on 7-8 November 2017, in ETSI Headquarters, Sophia Antipolis, France. SAVE THE DATE!

This event will investigate how the e-navigation concept and the evolution of GMDSS affect marine radiocommunication and navigation standardization in the mid/long term, taking also into account future requirements in terms of  capacity/rate for data transmission as well as security aspects which are essential for improving maritime safety.

E-navigation can be defined as the harmonized collection, integration, exchange, presentation and analysis of marine information on board and ashore by electronic means to enhance navigation and related services for safety and security at sea and protection of the marine environment. The idea of e-navigation is to require marine traffic to be regulated and controlled much as air traffic is by Air Traffic Control.  It is envisaged that e-navigation will play a major role in the future development and evolution of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).

The workshop will investigate how the e-navigation concept and the evolution of GMDSS affect marine radiocommunication and navigation standardization in the mid/long term, taking also into account future requirements in terms of  capacity/rate for data transmission as well as security aspects which are essential for improving maritime safety.

This is an essential event for all professionals working on the development of eNavigation, or for organizations with an interest in the development and standardization of an integrated eNavigation system.

We are also calling for demos (table-top exhibits). Proposals should be sent to Cette adresse e-mail est protégée contre les robots spammeurs. Vous devez activer le JavaScript pour la visualiser. by 25 September 2017.
More information is available under the tab "Call for demos (table-top exhibits)".

Programme :

  • Setting the scene: to generally inform the audience about main stakeholder views on e-navigation: challenges, benefits, impacts on GMDSS, spectrum needs and opportunities.
  • e-navigation and radionavigation/radiocommunication: to analyse the impact of e-navigation on radionavigation and radiocommunication equipment in the mid/long term (e.g. the evolution of GMDSS) and the associated impacts on standardization for both SOLAS/non-SOLAS ships.
  • Investigate attractiveness of future technologies: discuss the evolution of maritime systems: VHF Data Exchange System, broadband communications, 3GPP technologies for maritime communication services, evolution of satellite communications and enhancement of security will be analysed.
  • Conclusions: The major outcomes based on the presentations and discussions, relevant follow-up activities (for instance new (pre)standardization activities) and key elements resulting from the workshop will be summarized.

SAVE THE DATE! Participation to the workshop is open to all and free of charge upon registration.
